When's the best time to photograph newborn pictures?

For most newborn sessions, it is preferred to do it within 3 to 14 days after birth because they keep their fetal positions and a baby is at their most sleepiest state as if they were still in the womb .After this time period babies do not sleep as soundly and can get easily disturbed while posing for newborn pictures.

If babies are born premature there is some flexibility with this time frame. However, if you did not plan ahead, do not be panic. It never too late to document your baby and I do offer newborn sessions up to five weeks after birth.

Note for baby boys, If you are planning to circumcise your baby boy, the session will need to be before this or at least 5 days after the procedure.

Newborns change so quickly, even just in the first few days. You will soon forget just how tiny they were and wonder how they ever fit in your belly. This is why capturing those fleeting moments through baby photography becomes a cherished way to preserve those precious memories.

Some of the most frequent questions I get about newborn and baby photography sessions.

When is the best time to schedule a newborn photo session?: If you want some adorable newborn photos don't wait to book your session! Due to the time sensitive nature of newborn photography, advanced booking is advised.

The best time to photograph a newborn is during the first two weeks after birth, as newborns are most sleepy and flexible during this time, allowing for those adorable curled-up poses. So, don't wait until your baby arrives to book your newborn session.

I recommend booking in your second trimester (before your baby arrives) or booking both your maternity and newborn sessions at the same time. This way you can rest assured that your newborn photo session will occur within 2 weeks of birth, the very best time to get the sweetest photographs!

I limit the amount of bookings I take each month to allow a little flexibility because we never know when these little ones will arrive.

I book according to your due date and adjust when you let me know baby is here. I put all of my newborn’s due dates on my calendar. Some babies come early, some come on time, and others come late. I give myself a 2-3 week window before and after your due date. This allows me to be flexible when it is time to schedule your session and prevents me from overbooking.

I do book up quite fast so I definitely don’t recommend waiting until the last minute; I can’t guarantee I’ll have an opening.
When is the best time to take newborn photos?: The best time to capture newborn photos is typically within the first two weeks after the baby is born (3-16 days of age after birth). During this period, newborns tend to be sleepier, more flexible, and have a greater inclination to curl up into adorable poses reminiscent of their time in the womb. It's also a time when they still retain their newborn features, such as soft and delicate skin.

Here's a breakdown of the benefits of photographing newborns during different time frames:

Within the First Week: This is considered the ideal time for newborn photography. Babies are usually very sleepy and can be easily posed in various adorable positions. They are also more likely to cooperate during the session, and it's easier to capture those curled-up poses that showcase their newborn charm.

Between 1-2 Weeks: Even during this slightly extended time frame, newborns are still relatively sleepy and poseable, although they may start to become slightly more alert and less inclined to curl up naturally. It's still a great window for capturing beautiful newborn portraits.

Up to 5 Weeks: While it is still possible to photograph newborns up to 5 weeks old, they may be more awake and less inclined to curl up into those typical newborn poses. However, this age range allows for capturing their emerging personality and more eye contact shots.
How long does the newborn session takes?: The duration of the newborn session may vary depending on the package you choose and how cooperative the baby is during the session.

Newborn sessions typically last between 2 to 4 hours. This allows enough time for feeding, soothing, and capturing a variety of poses and setups. Patience is key, as babies may require breaks for feeding, diaper changes, or simply to be comforted.

For clients who book the Deluxe and/or The Classic Newborn sessions, these sessions offer a comprehensive newborn photography experience. They include a variety of props, setups, beanbag posing, and the opportunity for family and sibling poses with the baby. The duration of these sessions typically ranges from 2 to 4 hours, taking into account the cooperation and needs of the baby.

Clients who opt for the Simple newborn sessions will receive a mini newborn session that includes a few prop setups but does not include bean bag posing or family poses with the baby. These sessions are designed to be shorter in duration, typically lasting between 30 to 60 minutes.

For clients who book a First Family Portrait session, we will capture a variety of poses featuring the baby with mom, dad, and siblings, as well as the entire family together. This special first-time family photo session typically lasts between 45 to 60 minutes, allowing us to create beautiful memories of your growing family.
What to expect during the newborn session?: During a newborn photography session, here's what you can generally expect:

Newborns can be unpredictable, so it's important to remain calm and flexible during the session. Babies may be sleepy, awake, calm, or fussy at different times. The photographer will work with the baby's natural behavior to capture authentic and endearing photographs.

Safety Precautions: Ensuring the safety of your newborn is the top priority. The photographer will take necessary precautions and use techniques like compositing or having an assistant for certain poses to ensure your baby is always secure and supported.

Comfortable Environment: The studio will be kept warm and cozy to ensure your baby's comfort. The temperature is often adjusted to mimic the womb environment, helping to keep the baby relaxed and sleepy.
What to bring to the newborn session?: You don't have to stress about what to bring. It's all at the studio!

Editing is a big part of my job and I usually spend many hours editing your session after you leave. I am very detail-oriented and I will spend as much time as I need to give you the best of the best. Please allow approximately 2 weeks after your session and I will be sending you the proof gallery which allows you to review and select your final images.

If you plan on ordering any prints, wall arts, canvases, or products, I do offer professional prints and products through a professional lab at significantly reduced prices to encourage printing with me. This helps maintain the level of quality that your artistic images deserve.
